Um, we are live Um, I am back in My native west east coast still discombobulated native east coast uh after last week I know we had some production weird stuff because the internet connection that the airbnb we're staying was not amazing Um, but we fought through it. We made it work. Um So this is the last thing i'm gonna do this week um I'm gonna shut it on down and enjoy the fourth of july festivities uh once I get um Off of this, but I thought let's do this to you know, well friday afternoon everybody a little bit of a hang um I normally do This uh, the first half of it I do for all subscribers Uh second half I do for people who are members of either the dugout club the diamond club or the press club today I am going to um Do this for everybody? I think it's pretty vibrant um, I think Donald trump as i've said before is testing the limits of what an executive can do certainly can and should do More than we have seen at any point in modern history Uh, I think the systems are holding is it exactly what liberals want? No, it definitely is not but there's a republican in the white house a republican in the house and a republican and Republicans in the senate and the house are in control. So it was never going to be uh it was never going to be a um, like Gonna be what you wanted like if you're unhappy that it was a six to three vote On tariffs and a six to three vote on birthright citizenship both going against trump and it should have been nine. Oh, I would tell you you are Uh letting the perfect get in the way of the good. Um, but yeah, I like that matt That's i'm not sure that would work, but we could do it paul olson paul always um Thank you for your support of independent journalism means a lot paul says with his new power Could trump eliminate an agency like osha by firing everybody top to bottom, you know paul? I don't think we know yet Uh, there's what we do know after that ruling, uh by the supreme court this week is that donald trump has or any executive? Has more uh authority over these quasi independent agencies Than they might have in the past. What does that mean in sort of real terms? I don't know um, I think And i'm not sure anyone knows I think it's kind of not settled yet I think it's going to be figured out and you know, some people will probably Maybe there is maybe trump does try to fire everyone at osha and then there'll be a lawsuit and it'll go to the supreme Court and we'll see what the supreme court says, but I don't think we know yet to be totally honest Human nc from the uk. So for people who don't know dan osborne running For the second time in as many election cycles for the senate as an independent um in 2024 the there was no democratic nominee Osborne came within six points of beating deb fisher the republican senator. He's running again this time against pete ricketts Also a republican senator, uh, it looks as though the democratic nominee a woman named cindy burbank is going to drop out of that race Uh, i'm not totally sure if osborne has a real chance I think it's you know, it's not one of the top five senate races. Is it between five and ten probably? but I would say I think it's a I think it's a really Challenging state right nebraska is not a place where democrats have had a ton of success statewide um Uh wrestlemaniac afternoon chris. Do you think the algae in the reflecting pool is a sign of global warming? I I don't know enough to know I think it's a reflection. Hi chris Happy america 250th is the takeaway from the new york times senate polls that democrats shouldn't start spiking the football world While republicans need trump on the ballot level turnout Um, yes, and yes, I would say I think that the scenario painted by those new york times polls is close to the best case turnout scenario for Republicans i'm not sure that they're going to get to that place But but let's say they do then that's a democratic gain of between one two or three seats. Um So yes, I think it is true. But yes, I also think it's true. Look i've said this for a while I think democrats have got a little bit overexcited about their um prospects in the senate Again of the 22 seats that republicans currently hold that are on the ballot in 2026 donald trump won in 21 of those states, okay, so like it's It's it is an uphill climb. I think it's close. Look. It's a state kamala harris won by seven points in 2024, right? um that should Be a big leg up for graham platner I think he is likely to underperform the seven point win by kamala harris even if he wins um Both because I think he's a damaged candidate and because I think uh, susan collins runs good campaigns I just think it's gonna be close right somebody asked me this morning in my friday mailbag that I do for sub stack who? Who do you uh, which seat should democrats be more worried about? Uh winning maine or michigan and I said michigan I I still would rather be platner than abdul el-sayed the likely democratic nominee Maine is more democratic than michigan, right? But I do think maine is problematic Uh frange george leopold pagel. I'm, sorry for asking such a question. But after watching your videos, do you think trump is dumb? No um I think the whole trump Is an idiot thing isn't right. Um Again, how do you define smart? Are you saying like would donald trump score a 180 on an iq test? Probably not No, uh, neither would chris saliza Um, so like I don't uh I don't Know the answer to that right, but I I just think how do you measure smart and dumb? He's had a lot of success in the business world But I don't think success in the business world and wealth means you're smart It means you're savvy maybe at some level means you're lucky at some level So I just I don't like the debate over donald trump is is an idiot or is dumb. You know dan I wrote a big piece about this on my sub stack if you want to go and check it out earlier this week my view is Don't let the perfect get in the way of the good They threw out donald trump's attempt to overturn birthright citizenship. They threw out donald trump's attempt to seize tariff power uh broad tariff power Like I don't I don't really know what difference does it make how many votes there were the the next time this comes up The court is going to look differently anyway, not like it's going to come up next year So to me, yeah, I think the left is a little bit focused, uh too focused on um Like it should have been 9-0 and it was only 6-3. I mean i'm not questioning it But it that seems like it's uh, it's like a little bit of an overstatement Uh outsource, I don't even know really what outsource billionaires mean Do I think ai needs to be regulated at some level? Probably? Yes. Um Do I think it's going to happen in the near term? Probably? No, uh, be faithful a member of the dugout diamond or press club Do you think the 2026 elections will be safe from trump's interference and meddling? Look I say this all the time. Um, Elections are run by the states. They are not run by the federal government so it's hard for me to imagine that donald trump is going to be able to like Cancel them or I think that's like a little bit overblown and a little bit sky is falling ism from uh democrats um could donald trump will donald trump if Republicans lose say that the election was rigged. Yes. 100. You know, of course will he Continue to say it even after there's no proof of it. Yes, of course, but that's different than meddling, right? We had a job report this week 57 000 jobs created. It was way less Than expectations they revised downward the jobs created in the last two previous months So I just think it's I think probably worse my guess is it probably stays about the same But if that's not an option, I I lean it gets slightly worse than it then it gets better. All those polls show is that it's in those six races. It's close which again In all of those races except for maine donald trump won He won by three in north carolina and in every other state. He won by either high single digits or double digits So anyone who thought that democrats were just going to walk to the senate majority? this is never going to happen given the nature of Of where these seats are, uh, ethan haas a member of our members Committee, uh if aoc were to win the nomination who should be her running mate? Yes. She does have some kind of tremor syndrome or something like it's it's not um, it's it's It's not debilitating. She's had it for a long time. It makes her voice and she shakes a little bit Maybe that's a thing that they're worried about but I don't know um If you can't answer the question whether or not trump is done. You're done. Yeah you You have to find ways to get people to pay attention to you And yeah moderate doesn't have to mean boring for republicans or democrats um I think some of that is just a stereotype like andy beshear for example in governor of kentucky He's actually like a pretty charismatic engaging guy people say he's boring because they think of him as a moderate But I don't actually think that's true. But yes, there's no question in an attention economy You have to find ways to get people to pay attention to you No doubt chuckie cheese maine is already heavily left-leaning so much that they're openly calling for authoritarianism I don't think that's right spartan most likely republican seat to flip most like democrat seat to flip governor and senator Um most likely republican seat to flip is definitely in the senate north carolina. That's tom tillis's seat I think roy cooper the democrat's gonna win there Most likely democrat seat to flip is the michigan open seat race where gary peters isn't running again That's abdul al-sayed marilyn mallory mcmorrow hailey stevens and then the republican side mike rogers Uh for governor, I mean, you know, it's it's a little different like kansas is very likely to flip. It's been a two-term Democratic governor. I think that goes uh to back to republicans um trying to think if there's one like that on the democratic side Not that I can think of off the top of my head josh texas fan a member of the uh diamond dugout and press club Why do you and chuck keep downplaying the impact of dsa ideology on the democratic party? I'm not I don't want to speak for chuck, but i'm not downplaying it. I think the dsa thing is a big deal and a big story um I just am not sure my sense is that a lot of people who vote for the dsa candidate right now are voting for insurgency outsider younger Not part of washington more than they are voting for abolish ice Green new deal medicare for all we'll see how that plays out But I don't I don't get a sense that look there are absolutely people voting for the dsa candidate because of those issues I think a lot of them though are just voting because the dsa is like, you know, the liberal tea party shaking things up Uh saying the system is broken and needs fixing, you know, I mean, I think it's more that than anything else That's that's at least what i'm trying to to to get across Uh numbers member of the diamond dugout or press club. He's a credible alternative republican former republican member of congress now a democrat But I I think it's very likely byron donalds is the next governor. Yes Everything moves faster now including attention spans including Uh, sort of the life cycles of news stories and yes political capital got to do it as fast as you can. Of course he will That's what he does The reason they're doing this is because they recognize that the republican base is not Energized about this election and they want it to be more energized.
