President Trump is calling on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar to resign,
accusing her of using a fake
name, among other allegations.
The president writing on Truth Social, please inform the
Speaker of the House of Representatives,
James Michael Johnson, that the Democrat Party has
just conceded her seat.
Ilhan Noor Saeed Elmi, her real name, has openly admitted to fraud and
she'll not be legally allowed to be a member
of this august body from this point forth.
Here to discuss is The Hill's deputy managing editor,
Sarakshi Rai. Sarakshi,
thank you so much for joining us.
What is the dispute over Omar's name here?
That's right. So in a court filing on Wednesday,
this is a week after federal agents really
conducted a search warrant of Ilhan Omar's home in Washington,
D.C., the federal prosecutors
referred to Ilhan Omar, the Minnesota Democrat,
as Congresswoman Ilhan Noor Saeed Elmi without
any explanation uh you know now we know Ilhan Omar's ex-husband's name
is Ahmed Nur Saeed Elmi
um so basically Janine Pirro
who is the U.S. Attorney uh in Washington D.C. she suggested that
Omar's name could be part of this federal probe into the lawmaker
and she said this in a Fox News
appearance so what she said was basically
that if you have citizenship in this country your
derivative citizenship or your naturalization
your application will turn on precise information and
you have an obligation to report that precise information
so the question is who is Ilhan Omar
and has she followed all of the laws as it relates to naturalization
and immigration so basically
they've now seeds on the fact that uh you know perhaps there
is some kind of alleged discrepancy
in her name and that somehow is bringing up
these questions of of what she filed when she was when
she applied for naturalization.
And that is the center of this controversy here, Judy.
So actually, you mentioned federal agents
with the Department of Homeland Security searched
Omar's home. And as you said,
U.S. Attorney for D.C. Janine Pirro suggested there may be a
separate federal probe into the congresswoman.
Do we know why these investigations are happening now?
So that's a little unclear.
The Trump administration, however, is investigating
Ilhan Omar for alleged immigration fraud,
an accusation that she's repeatedly denied.
Ilhan Omar has accused the president of waging
a campaign of political intimidation against her
for years. And she also said during an interview
with MSNBC's Chris Hayes that she would have to
move out of her D.C. apartment now
because of the threats she's received. She also said that
the agents had seized 17 items.
She also said that she was confident that she had done nothing
wrong. However, you know,
the president has once again invoked a conspiracy theory platform
that has been platformed by far-right commentators
that Omar had, you know,
perhaps misled immigration authorities, which is what he's alleging.
And Omar has, you know,
so far said the accusation is insane.
What else do we know about the search on Omar's home? What
agencies there? So we know that they took 17 items.
Part of those items, Ilhan Omar said,
were phones belonging to her as well as her son and her daughter,
who wasn't at the house at the
time. But, you know, they also said she said they gave
her a list of stuff. They seized her laptop
as well. But so far, not a lot of information
as to exactly what led to that raid taking place.
and we have yet to hear any kind of reasoning so far
or anything put out there by the Department of Justice.
How has Omar responded to President Trump
in these investigations as well as these allegations?
So Omar has been defiant.
She's said that she's confident
that she will be completely found innocent
of all of these allegations.
She says that the president has waged
years of political intimidation,
a campaign of political intimidation against her,
and that, you know, she is not intimidated
and ready to fight and said that the raid did freak
her out. And it was, you know,
perhaps designed to do so is what she said, but that she is not
intimidated and she's confident that she will be found innocent.
What might happen next in these
investigations? So far, you know, we still have to hear.
So the court filings have just come out,
but we will see how the case proceeds in court
and if the president and the Trump administration
release any more findings from this raid
or the Department of Justice release any more findings
from this raid. And, you know,
this back and forth between the president and Ilhan Omar is
sure to continue as we're now just a week
from the midterm elections as well. All right. We'll
have to leave it there. The Hill's Deputy Managing Editor,
Sirak Shirai, thank you so much for joining us.
