And today marking one year since a reporter with the Wall Street Journal
Was jailed in Moscow, Russia
It's a US citizen who's been charged with espionage and he's Jack Bradley joins us now live from the State Department
Jack good evening. What is the latest on this?
Good evening Steve. Well, we have Evan Grishka Vich right here on the Wall Street Journal
He was the whole front page was dedicated to him as this year marks the first year today marks the first year of him being
detained for a year in
Moscow
now recent video shows him
Doing quite well actually in good spirits rather behind a defendant's box in Moscow. Take a look
He's stuck in a tiny cell for the whole day and night. He's only has one other cellmate he can communicate with
He has one hour daily can you walk outside in a tiny courtyard of the cell but despite the incredibly difficult
Circumstances Evan remains strong. He remains hopeful for his release. He's not broken neither physically or mentally. He's in good spirits
Now Grishka Vich is the first American reporter to be arrested on espionage charges
in Moscow and in Russia since
1986
Now he's denied all of these charges and the American government has declared his sentencing and detainment wrongful
He's wrongfully detained Secretary of State Antony Blinken today
He said that in a statement to date Russia has provided no evidence of wrongdoing and people are not bargaining chips
Russia should end its practice of arbitrarily detaining individuals for political leverage now Blinken also announced today
That he will be working on sanctioning Hong Kong officials
Who are hand-picked by the Chinese Communist Party?
He said in a statement
There's an intensifying repression and ongoing crackdown by the Chinese regime and Hong Kong authorities on civil society
media and dissenting voices
Including through the issuance of bounties and arrest warrants for more than a dozen pro-democracy activists living outside Hong Kong
These sanctions are in response to the national security law, which has been cracking down on human rights in Hong Kong
Notably Jimmy Lai
The founder of Apple Daily. It's a Hong Kong media outlet
He's been arrested and detained for four years in Hong Kong since the national security law was announced
As these sanctions come out, we'll keep you updated Steve back to you
Antony's Jack Bradley reporting live from the State Department in Washington. Thanks Jack a
Heavy crane able to lift a thousand tons will help clear the wreckage in Baltimore Harbor in the aftermath of this week's bridge collapse
Experts expect the cost to restore the waterway and rebuild the bridge could surpass two billion dollars
Our Washington correspondent Louise Martinez has more on this story
the largest crane in the Northeast US arrived in Baltimore today to assist in removing over
4,000 pounds of debris hanging over the container ship dolly and over the Baltimore Harbor
demolition experts believe they can open a single-lane channel in
Approximately a month by clearing the debris in the 1,200 foot area in between the two main pillars of the bridge
The Port of Baltimore is the ninth busiest port in the United States and the second largest exporter of coal around
220 million dollars worth of goods transit through the port every day
It employs over 8,000 people with a payroll of over 2 million dollars daily
The port is the largest importer and exporter of cars and light trucks in the country with more than 850 thousand vehicles
Moving through every year government officials have stressed that the cleaning and recovery of the waterway is a matter of national concern
The disaster will affect the supply chains of the Northeast and businesses dependent on them
But collectively as a supply chain, we should find alternative
ports whether in New York, Virginia
Charleston there are other opportunities for us to you know
Enable the logistical part of this to get back into the supply chains
According to experts the operation will cost over a billion dollars and Congress will most likely have to intervene to facilitate the funds
I've heard from colleagues all over the country County executives and mayors
Who are small large rural urban Democrat Republican, you know
But for the grace of God this could be any of us and I hope this doesn't become something that's partisan and logged up
I'd like to see Congress move quickly
the Department of Transportation's emergency relief program outlines a plan in which the federal government will pay for
90% of the reconstruction costs and the state of Maryland the remaining 10% that fund only has
950 million dollars next week when President Biden visits the port of Baltimore
It is expected that he will ask Congress to facilitate more funds
Reporting from Washington DC. He's a lot of Martinez NTD news

I'm Steve Lance and an escalating campaign targeting an American dance troupe is drawing national attention from lawmakers
Congressman Pat Ryan says he's working with law enforcement over a round of false bomb threats aimed at New York Performing Arts
company Shen Yun
Speaking to NTD sister outlet the Epoch Times Ryan says his office is in close contact with the FBI
In the wake of these threats
He added Shen Yun performers and audiences deserve to quote feel safe and have peace of mind without any fear of violence
Touring across the globe Shen Yun's mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture by showcasing China before
Communism but in the last two weeks the company received several bomb threats in the United States
That includes one email that threatened a mass shooting at the troops headquarters in upstate, New York
And earlier this month Shen Yun's artists said they faced harassment from a customs agent at a Chicago Airport
The official allegedly questioned their religious background and attempted to deny their entry
Several lawmakers have called for an investigation
into these incidents and
Why should the United States defend Taiwan against aggression from the communist Chinese?
Joining me now to assess is Victoria Coates former deputy national security advisor to President Trump and vice president of the Heritage
Foundations Institute for national security and foreign policy
Victoria Coates, thank you so much for joining
Of course good to be with you, of course, Victoria a Heritage Foundation president. Dr. Kevin Roberts just returning from a trip to Taiwan
He gave a talk at Heritage yesterday saying that Taiwan was one of a handful of countries that if it were attacked
Would directly affect how?
Americans lives would be affected the very next day essentially
Why is Taiwan such a unique United States ally?
It really is a fascinating case Steve and we've just completed at dr
Roberts direction what we call the American case for Taiwan his question to us
Sort of early last fall as the Davis Institute for National Security is is why should we defend Taiwan?
Why would we potentially put United States treasure and even blood at risk for a country so far away?
And so that was really the purpose of both the it the report that we've done and the results of the trip that he and
I took in February was to see what it is about Taiwan. That's unique and as the report documents first of all, it's geography
Taiwan does not exist in any way in a vacuum and is part of that first island chain
If you look at a map that runs right up to Japan
Also very closely situated vis-a-vis the Philippines and we have treaty alliances with both the Philippines and Japan
So that it creates a direct
interest and then there's the achievements that Taiwan has accomplished over its many decades of
existence, especially since democratization in the 80s and 90s and
Taiwan is the number four country on heritage's index of economic freedom
They've made extraordinary advances in terms of both the semiconductor chips that most people know about
We can talk about that a little bit more if you want. I now know enough to be dangerous
but also in
Manufacturing and there are a series of other activities that are unique to the island
And so, you know, we concluded in the report as dr. Roberts said yesterday that yes indeed
The defense of Taiwan is in the vital national security interests of the United States
So what policies could or should the United States be enacting to deter China from their regional?
Ambitions in the Indo-Pacific I
Would say you know that we we actually just need to make good on our commitments
And the other nice thing about Taiwan is you know, they are a full-paying customer. They're not asking for aid
They're asking for expedited sales
And so get you know
And but we're hugely in arrears and delivering the things that they want to buy and so I think working with Congress
So we can facilitate those foreign military sales make it clear that we are going to
expedite the sales to the Philippines to Japan and to Taiwan itself so that these good treaty allies as I said
Who are expanding their defense budgets Japan?
Most notably can have the materials to defend themselves that they need and make it clear to China that we're not just going to cede
The island to them make them think again literally now bringing it back home
To the CCP's boldness on US soil
We've been covering the New York based Shen Yun performing arts whose tagline is China before communism
If you haven't seen the billboards throughout the country
Which has come under a string of attacks from tire slashed on their tour buses to multiple bomb threats
Over the past two weeks at theaters and their training
Facilities, how bold is the Chinese Communist Party? And what should we be doing to prevent the CCP's?
Transnational repression from spreading in our own country
Yeah, I mean the Shen Yun is a lovely Chinese ballet company traditional Chinese
We supported them when I was working for Senator Cruz and in the Senate
They perform in Houston every year and we always wrote a letter of support
because it really is a wonderful expression of traditional Chinese culture, which is what Mao set out to destroy and
So they have they have persisted in this art form, which as I said is lovely and
you know what we're seeing now of the attacks on them on US soil is how threatening the CCP sees this representation of
Chinese culture before Mao before the revolution and I you know
I have to be concerned, you know with how bold China is being in the United States
Chinese nationals are now the nut by percentage the number two number of illegals after Colombia coming across the southern border
Who knows if those some of those people have been directed to carry out these attacks, you know?
And so you you keep wondering what kind of activities the Chinese coming in
Illegally are directed to do I mean this is might be exactly what they've been told to do to to harass this group into terror
Terrorize them into stopping performances Victoria Coates really appreciate your perspective. Thank you. Of course. Thank you
The Chinese Communist Party also has a military style strategy to harm and disintegrate
American society it's according to my next guest who wrote the book blood money after investigating how China
Deploys deadly fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction joining me now to discuss his book is Peter Schweitzer
Peter Schweitzer, thank you so much for joining
Good to be with you. Thanks for having me. Of course Peter your book blood money
details China's historical weaponization of drugs against the United States
Tracing it back to the opium wars and culminating in the precision deployment of the lethal fentanyl, which we're seeing a crisis
Throughout our country over the past many years now. Can you elaborate on the military like precision of this weaponization?
Yeah, I think one of the big misnomers about fentanyl is that this is primarily an operation of the Mexican drug cartels
They're in fact the junior partners
Just look at every link in the chain the precursors, of course many people know come from China
They arrive in the port of Manzanillo in Mexico
That port is actually run by a Chinese company
the precursors are then sent to a town in northern Mexico where
2,000 Chinese nationals help the drug cartels turn these precursors into the cocktail
They then have to put them in pill form
So what do they do they import at cost pill presses and pill molds from China?
Once they actually have produced the pills the drug cartels now need secure communications to distribute this poison across America
What do they use they use Chinese communication devices and apps because they know that China will not
Share those communications with US law enforcement and then the final link in the chain is the money laundering process
I used to be that the Mexican drug cartels laundered their money in Latin American banks
Now they use Chinese state-owned banks and they often use Chinese students in the United States on education visas
So this is a Chinese operation with support from the Mexican drug cartels
Peter what if you could tell us what is the CCP's ultimate goal in in deploying?
This fentanyl into the United States
Well, it's part of what they call
Disintegration warfare that was actually a book written on by that title in 2012
There was an earlier book called unrestricted warfare and both of these books have been embraced by a president
G and the strategy basically says they want to fragment harm and disintegrate
American society and drugs are a component of that
There are other things that they are doing
But they have had a lot of success in a terrible way in this area
because of course fentanyl is now the leading cause of death for people in America under the age of 45 and it's deployed as a
Sort of hidden weapon the vast majority of the people that are dying of fentanyl poisoning don't even know they're taking fentanyl
They think they're taking a vitamin or an adderall
So this is a weapon that is crim really crippling American society and costing us some of the our best and brightest
Peter talk to us about tick-tock that social media application
It came out of committee unanimously
to
You know ban it essentially
And then there's been a little bit of a discussion about First Amendment. Where do you stand on?
You know shifting tick-tocks ownership outside of China. It's a Chinese company
That's essentially joined at the hip with the Chinese state. Let's remember that this all-important
Algorithm that is so addictive and so effective in giving a target audiences
What they want is not only a company secret the Chinese government actually declared it a state secret
By dance the parent company for tick-tock does extensive joint research on artificial intelligence
And other subjects with the Chinese Ministry of State Security, which is their spy agency
It's the FBI the CIA and the NSA all rolled into one
So this is not just a Chinese company
It's a company that works hand in glove with the Chinese state and as I quote extensively in my book blood money
They are quite open amongst themselves as how effective this tool is to manipulate young people in the West
And to use it as a tool of propaganda one military official calls it the ultimate Trojan horse
So I think for that reason it needs to be
Sold this sale needs to be forced and I think the bill is a good one help us sort of
distinguish between
The Chinese people and the Chinese Communist Party the Chinese Communist Party is guided by Marxism Leninism
Karl Marx was not Chinese
Vladimir men Lenin was not Chinese if you look at this from the Chinese perspective
This is sort of a Western hateful ideology that was imposed on China by this small cadre of
Revolutionaries like Chairman Mao who are educated by these Western outlets
So no, there's a huge distinction between the CCP and the Chinese people
In fact, the biggest victims of the CCP are actually the Chinese people themselves
So that's a misdirection a misnomer
And we ought to dismiss it and get back to the core issues here and not let them play this race car
Peter Schweitzer with a very powerful new book blood money. Thank you so much for joining
