SOUTHEAST – A Connecticut bondsman arrested in the Town of Southeast in March for attempting to capture a woman who skipped out on bail has had his case dismissed.
John Kunkiewicz, 52, of Torrington had the opportunity to accept a plea deal but refused to do so because he said Connecticut bondsmen have to cross state lines into New York State to apprehend Connecticut defendants who skipped bail.
The case was dismissed this week following a motion filed by Kunkiewicz’s attorney in Southeast Town Court.
The arrest took place on March 5, 2026, when Kunkiewicz and two other bail enforcement officers attempted to apprehend Laura England-Moss after she failed to appear in Danbury Superior Court on charges of interfering with police.
The three were charged after Putnam Sheriff’s Department personnel responded to a Southeast residence following a report of individuals forcing their way inside to locate a wanted person.
Police said the bondsmen entered the residence unlawfully and did not have the authority to do so.
The situation escalated when an individual inside the home allegedly claimed to have a firearm. The agents called 911, prompting a response from multiple police departments. No gun was found.
Despite initially cooperating with the agents at the scene, police arrested the three men.
Putnam County District Attorney Robert Tendy said allegations initially made by the husband of England-Moss turned out to be false.
