MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Legislature Thursday voted to hire two law firms to represent the county and county manager after they were found in criminal contempt of a State Supreme Court order not to move forward with moving residents from the county nursing home in Liberty after they were instructed on two occasions not to do so.
The lawmakers hired the firms at their going rates but did not specify the costs. Legislator Catherine Scott sought to cap the costs at $50,000, but that failed for lack of a second n her amendment.
When she attempted to justify her proposal, she was cut off by the chairwoman.
“This is a blank check of taxpayer money,” she said.
Harris Beach Murtha Cullina PLLC was hired to represent the county and Mackey Catania & Whalen was engaged to represent the county manager.
