LOS ANGELES — Dead Man’s Bones Release First New Song in 17 Years
Dead Man’s Bones, the duo formed by Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields, have officially returned with their first new music in 17 years. The release follows a brief teaser that sparked online excitement about the group’s comeback.
Their new single, “Lost in the Night,” was produced alongside longtime collaborator Tim Anderson. The song is accompanied by a black-and-white music video starring Noah Jupe, known for Hamnet, and Rain Spencer, who appeared in The Summer I Turned Pretty. The visuals draw inspiration from the track’s romantic lyrics.
The duo had attempted to create new music in recent years but struggled to decide where to record it. After trying several studios in Los Angeles, Gosling and Shields eventually traveled to a farm outside the city, bringing two guitars, two drum machines and two synthesizers. They recorded “Lost in the Night” in a single day.
Dead Man’s Bones released their first and only album, a self-titled debut, in 2009. For the project, Gosling and Shields collaborated extensively with the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir, a California educational organization founded by Flea. The album blended indie rock, gothic folk and doo-wop.
Following the promotional campaign for their debut, the duo largely withdrew from public view. Their music, however, continued to attract attention over the years through cover versions, film and television placements, and seasonal interest driven by social media users playing their songs around Halloween.
Among the notable covers was Cat Power’s rendition of “Pa Pa Power,” which appeared on her 2022 album Covers. The renewed attention helped keep Dead Man’s Bones in the public consciousness despite the lengthy gap between releases.
