Rep. Ilhan Omar is proceeding with a sold-out political event featuring left-wing commentator Hasan Piker despite objections from Minnesota Democrats who say his controversial statements could damage the party ahead of the Nov. 3 elections.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., is scheduled to appear alongside socialist political commentator Hasan Piker at a sold-out Minneapolis event Monday evening, Oct. 26, despite growing criticism from fellow Democrats and Republican lawmakers over Piker’s past remarks about terrorism, Israel and American politics.
The appearance, hosted by Minnesota state Sen. Omar Fateh, comes eight days before the midterm elections and has exposed disagreements within the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party over whether Piker’s substantial following among younger progressive voters outweighs concerns about his controversial rhetoric.
According to Fox News’ reporting Monday, several prominent Minnesota Democrats have publicly criticized the event, while other party officials have urged Omar and Fateh to cancel Piker’s appearance.
Rep. Angie Craig, D-Minn., described Piker’s rhetoric as “polarizing and dangerous” and said embracing him is “a mistake.” The gubernatorial campaign of Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., separately characterized several of the commentator’s previous statements as “reckless and unacceptable.”
The event, titled “I’m the Host Now,” is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Minneapolis and was announced earlier this month. Organizers reported that tickets sold out within minutes.
Piker, a prominent Twitch streamer with a substantial audience among younger left-wing viewers, regularly discusses American politics, foreign policy and socialist political ideas. His commentary has attracted criticism over statements concerning the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Hamas and Israel.
Among his most widely criticized remarks was a statement that America deserved the Sept. 11 attacks. Piker subsequently apologized for that characterization and has denied accusations of antisemitism.
The controversy surrounding Omar’s appearance has intensified as Democrats attempt to mobilize voters during the final week of campaigning.
University of Minnesota political science professor Larry Jacobs told FOX 9 that Piker’s involvement would “create a split within the DFL,” potentially complicating the party’s effort to maintain a unified campaign message.
Jacobs suggested the dispute could also create difficulties for Democratic candidates seeking support from moderate and Jewish voters, particularly given Piker’s previous comments about Israel and Hamas.
Omar’s campaign has defended the event as an effort to increase participation among younger voters, whose early-voting turnout has reportedly declined.
“Early voting among people under 40 is down, and we need to do everything to get young people to the polls,” a campaign spokesperson said, according to Minnesota Public Radio’s coverage of the dispute.
The campaign said Omar remains focused on encouraging voter participation despite objections from other Democratic officials.
Republican lawmakers have also condemned the event, arguing that Piker’s previous statements should disqualify him from appearing alongside elected officials.
In an Oct. 23 joint statement, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., joined Reps. Pete Stauber, Michelle Fischbach and Brad Finstad in criticizing Omar and Fateh for inviting the commentator.
“Hasan Piker has said America deserved 9/11, declared he would vote for Hamas over Israel, and described the Republican Party as the world’s largest terrorist organization. Antisemitism, hatred, and the glorification of terrorism and political violence have no place in Minnesota or anywhere in the United States. Hasan Piker has repeatedly made reprehensible statements that deserve unequivocal condemnation, not a platform alongside elected officials. It is deeply troubling that Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and State Senator Omar Fateh would choose to elevate someone with his record, and every elected Democrat in the State of Minnesota must join us in rejecting his hateful and violence-ridden rhetoric,” the Republican delegation stated.
Piker has also drawn attention for occasionally wearing clothing modeled after the distinctive suits associated with former Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong. His socialist political positions and criticism of American foreign policy have contributed to his reputation as a divisive commentator.
The disagreement is not limited to Republicans and Democrats. Within Minnesota’s Democratic Party, officials have debated whether appearing alongside Piker helps engage progressive activists or creates additional controversy for candidates competing in statewide and congressional races.
Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura defended Piker ahead of the event, appearing in an interview with the streamer Sunday. Ventura’s support contrasted with criticism from several current Democratic officials.
Piker’s appearance has also attracted attention because of Omar’s ongoing legal dispute with federal authorities concerning her immigration history.
Federal agents executed a search warrant at Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence Oct. 12 as part of an investigation examining immigration documents submitted when she and her family entered the United States as refugees.
According to reporting concerning the investigation, agents seized 17 items, including electronic devices and documents. Federal investigators have also reportedly pursued DNA-related evidence as part of the inquiry.
The investigation has revived longstanding allegations about Omar’s family relationships and citizenship history, including claims that she previously married a relative and questions about names appearing in immigration records.
Omar has repeatedly denied committing immigration fraud. The allegations concerning her former husband and family relationships have not been established as facts, and authorities have not announced a criminal conviction against her.
The congresswoman has characterized the investigation as politically motivated, while federal officials maintain that the search was conducted pursuant to a judicially authorized warrant.
The renewed attention to Omar’s immigration investigation has added another issue to her reelection campaign as she prepares to appear with Piker and Fateh.
A social media discussion of the controversy has also highlighted the competing reactions to the planned appearance, particularly criticism from political figures who oppose Piker’s rhetoric.
Despite those objections, organizers have not announced plans to cancel the Minneapolis gathering.
The dispute underscores divisions among Minnesota Democrats over political messaging, outreach to younger progressive voters and the consequences of associating with controversial commentators.
With Election Day approaching, Omar and Fateh are proceeding with the event while Democratic and Republican officials continue debating whether Piker’s participation will help mobilize voters or distract from the party’s closing campaign priorities.
