Sammy Smith has officially claimed back-to-back wins at Talladega Superspeedway. The phenom earned his first career Craftsman Truck Series win, ending a 53-race O’Reilly Series drought. But he didn’t need this dominance to change his season’s direction, and it certainly didn’t hurt. The JR Motorsports driver waited for the right moment to strike on the final lap of The Progress Group 250 and made a last-lap pass, beating teammate Carson Kvapil by 0.084 seconds. The win capped a weekend of double duty, but it wasn’t as easy as Smith made it look.
Smith’s No. 8 JR Motorsports Chevrolet qualified 11th, leaving him with plenty of work to do in a race where position and timing matter just as much as speed. Kvapil was no doubt the driver to beat for much of the evening, leading 67 of 94 laps and winning the opening stage. But Smith stayed within reach of Kvapil, watching and strategizing when to make a move instead of waiting for the draft to push him.
On the final lap, Justin Allgaier pushed Smith down the backstretch, helping the No. 8 get alongside Kvapil and successfully make the pass for the win. This put Smith in victory lane, followed by Kvapil in P2 and championship leader Jesse Love 0.131 seconds behind in P3. The top four crossed the finish line within 0.144 seconds of one another, showing just how fiercely contested the final run to the checkered flag was at Talladega’s 2.66-mile superspeedway.
The victory is Smith’s fourth in 139 O’Reilly Auto Parts Series starts and first in 53 races, yet the number alone does not explain the results. Smith spent much of the 2026 season trying to convert speed into a finish, and Talladega gave him the chance to do it in the most demanding way possible: make the right call in traffic and deliver when the checkered flag was close.
Friday’s Truck Series result made tonight’s breakthrough even more notable. In the Love’s RV Stop 225, Smith drove the No. 7 Spire in his 11th start. He led 21 laps and beat Tyler Ankrum by 0.091 seconds after an overtime restart. Austin Green finished P3, followed by Ty Majeski and Kaden Honeycutt, rounding out the top five. The race included five cautions and two incidents, so keeping his truck in contention until the final lap was an achievement.
The win also comes after Smith announced Friday that he is planning to compete full-time in the Truck Series with TRICON Garage in 2027. The announcement added weight to the win, but it didn’t distract him from the task at hand: getting results. He knew he had what it took to do the job in the No. 7, and that’s what ultimately put him in victory lane and carried his momentum into a win for JR Motorsports tonight.
The O’Reilly win has single-handedly tightened the championship battle, narrowing Love’s advantage over Allgaier by 19 points. Kvapil’s runner-up finish also helped his position, while Allgaier finished P4 and won Stage 2. With the National Debt Relief 250 at Martinsville Speedway up next and the season finale at Homestead-Miami within reach, the points picture remains unsettled.
Even so, one thing is clear: Smith owned the weekend in a race that looked like Kvapil’s to lose. Two days, two last-lap battles, and victories in two NASCAR series made Talladega a turning point for the 22-year-old. His Truck Series breakthrough ended on wait, and the O’Reilly Series another. It all happened at a track where patience can be as valuable as speed, and Smith had both.
