Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has reportedly invested approximately $1 billion in Skydance, the entertainment conglomerate controlled by David Ellison, giving the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive an indirect financial stake in CNN, CBS News and some of the largest television and film properties in the United States.

The investment, first reported Thursday, Oct. 22, by Semafor, comes just weeks after Skydance completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, bringing the two major American news networks under the same corporate ownership.

According to people familiar with the transaction, Musk’s contribution was part of a broader effort by Skydance to attract additional equity investment as the company works to reduce debt, integrate its newly acquired businesses and strengthen its financial position.

Other investors, including Skydance board member Laurene Powell Jobs, reportedly contributed additional capital around the same time.

Neither Musk nor Skydance has publicly confirmed the investment or disclosed the precise size of his ownership stake. It also remains unclear whether the transaction provides Musk with board representation or any management authority.

The reported investment follows Skydance’s Oct. 6 completion of its approximately $110 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, a transaction that substantially expanded the media company’s portfolio.

The combined business, operating under the Skydance name, includes CNN, CBS, HBO, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Paramount+, Nickelodeon, MTV and TNT Sports.

David Ellison, the son of Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, serves as chairman and chief executive of the newly combined company, alongside co-CEO Ynon Kreiz.

Musk’s investment gives him an indirect financial interest in those properties through the parent company rather than direct ownership of CNN or CBS.

The transaction is particularly notable because Musk has repeatedly criticized CNN and other established news organizations over their coverage of political and cultural issues.

However, there is no public indication that the investment grants him editorial authority over either news network.

The reported deal also strengthens Musk’s longstanding financial relationship with the Ellison family, whose business interests span technology, artificial intelligence and entertainment.

Larry Ellison previously invested approximately $1 billion to support Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of Twitter in 2022. The social media company was subsequently renamed X.

Ellison also invested in Tesla in 2018 and served on the electric vehicle manufacturer’s board of directors until 2022.

The Oracle founder played a significant financial role in his son’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, personally guaranteeing more than $40 billion in financing commitments associated with the transaction.

Musk’s latest investment effectively reverses the financial relationship, with Musk now contributing substantial capital to the Ellison family’s expanding media operations.

The timing is significant because Skydance faces considerable financial obligations following the Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition.

According to Reuters, the company is seeking to strengthen its balance sheet while implementing cost reductions and repositioning its entertainment businesses for a more technology-driven marketplace.

The combined company carries tens of billions of dollars in debt, with estimates placing the total near $82.5 billion.

Skydance executives have outlined plans to achieve at least $6 billion in annualized cost savings and operational improvements over the next three years.

Those plans include restructuring operations, eliminating overlapping expenses and expanding the use of technology to improve production and distribution efficiency.

Musk’s financial participation could also create opportunities for cooperation between Skydance and his other businesses, particularly SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service.

Billionaire media executive John Malone recently suggested that a partnership involving Starlink could help Skydance distribute its television and streaming properties as audiences continue shifting away from traditional cable services.

During a media industry conference this week, Malone predicted that Musk could become a significant financial partner in the combined entertainment company.

“I think there’s a deal coming there,” Malone said, according to TheWrap.

Malone cited the longstanding relationship between Musk and Larry Ellison as a potential foundation for further cooperation.

“He’s gonna have to re-engineer all of those channels, and figure out how they morph into streams themselves rather than just traditional linear,” Malone said, referring to the challenges facing traditional television distribution.

No formal Starlink distribution agreement has been announced.

The new investment also places Musk among investors in a company controlling two major American television news operations at a time when corporate ownership of media outlets is attracting heightened public attention.

Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery brought CNN under the same parent company as CBS News, consolidating a significant portion of the national television news market.

David Ellison has maintained that the company’s news organizations will retain editorial independence.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Skydance shares initially rose following news of Musk’s investment before reversing their gains as investors continued evaluating the company’s debt and restructuring plans.

Although the precise terms remain undisclosed, the reported transaction expands Musk’s financial interests beyond electric vehicles, aerospace, artificial intelligence and social media into traditional broadcasting and Hollywood entertainment.

With Skydance controlling CNN, CBS and major film and streaming businesses, Musk’s $1 billion investment establishes a new connection between his technology empire and some of the country’s largest media properties.

Whether that relationship develops into additional financing, business partnerships or changes in corporate governance remains undetermined.
