Oct. 19 — Netflix said on Monday that film division head Dan Lin would leave the company after nearly three years in the role, marking the streaming platform’s second senior executive departure in less than a week amid questions about slowing user engagement.
The announcement follows Netflix’s statement on Thursday that content chief Bela Bajaria would depart after nearly a decade with the company. Former Disney executive Peter Rice has been named as her replacement.
Rice will oversee Netflix’s film division until the company announces a new head.
Netflix’s growth outlook and audience engagement have come under increased scrutiny. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently acknowledged that the company was “not growing as fast as I want us to.”
Engagement data has also indicated that users are spending more time on creator-led video platforms such as YouTube, adding to questions about Netflix’s ability to maintain its growth.
The company, which is cutting about 6% of its workforce, is scheduled to report its third-quarter financial results after markets close on Tuesday.
During his tenure, Lin oversaw KPop Demon Hunters, which became a breakout hit for Netflix and won an Academy Award, strengthening the company’s feature animation strategy.
Lin previously worked as a senior executive at Warner Bros. Pictures and was among the producers of Sherlock Holmes and the Lego movies.
His departure adds to a series of leadership changes as Netflix faces questions about audience engagement, growth prospects and its position in an increasingly competitive video-streaming market.
