NEW YORK — Harry Styles Debuts Unreleased Song in Memory of Liam Payne on Second Anniversary of His Death

Harry Styles brought an emotional moment to his Madison Square Garden residency in New York on Friday, using the encore to honor former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne on the second anniversary of his death.

Styles surprised the audience with the debut of “What Is Enough,” a song he said he wrote “about two years ago” but had not shared publicly until now. Delivered as an acoustic ballad with minimal accompaniment, the song featured Styles reflecting directly on Payne and the impact of his loss, singing to “help you understand what you leave behind.”

The lyrics also appeared to reference Payne’s funeral, which took place Nov. 20, 2024. Styles sang, “I could tell you what it’s like to bury friends on a Wednesday night, gathered in the garden ’round a fire.”

Fans at the concert and those who later watched footage of the performance had difficulty hearing every word because of the arena’s acoustics and Styles’ notably soft delivery. The song, which served as a musical tribute to Payne, included several seemingly audible lines about grief and remembrance, including: “Among the stars above, the friend in all those satellites… I’m not wise enough, but I wrote you a letter just to burn it up, and watch it rise.”

Before introducing the song, Styles began with what initially sounded like a familiar farewell message encouraging concertgoers to travel safely. His remarks soon took on a more personal tone.

“I hope you keep looking after each other, and please get home safety,” he told the audience. “Tell a stranger you love ’em; tell your friends that you love ’em.”

Styles then spoke about his connection to Madison Square Garden and the people who had helped him reach that point in his career.

“Being here, I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York. This building means a lot to me, as I said, and I feel incredibly proud when I get to look up there and see my name up there from last year,” he said.

He was referring to a banner commemorating his previous success with a “Together, Together” run of shows at the venue.

Styles went on to acknowledge the friends and colleagues who had supported him throughout his journey, explaining that he would not have reached his current position without them.

“And there are so many people in my life, friends and people that I’ve worked with, that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without. And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends. It’s sad. I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t. But, really, it’s just about looking after each other. And there are so many people more than my name that is on that banner. There are so many more people behind it, so many people who have touched my life in such special ways. I wouldn’t be here without them.”

The audience responded with loud cheers as Styles prepared to share the previously unheard song.

“I’m gonna play you a song that I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right with you… This is ‘What Is Enough,’” he announced.

After the unexpected premiere, Styles resumed the concert’s planned set, completing the encore with “Sign of the Times” and “Aperture.”
