BREWSTER- Fire engines rolled up to the front of John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Brewster with lights flashing and sirens wailing.

There was no emergency—a group of dedicated Brewster and Putnam Lake Fire Department personnel spent several hours at the school on a cool, crisp morning teaching children how to ‘learn not to burn.’

Under the direction of the Brewster Fire Department Fire Prevention officers Thomas Lannon and ex-chief Ken Clair, children had the opportunity to inspect engines, with some given the chance to use a ‘charged’ fire hose.

In the school auditorium, 5-, 6-, and 7-year-olds also learned fire-safety lessons designed to help prevent tragedies in Putnam County.

At last week’s Putnam Legislature meeting, Legislator Tommy Regan recognized both men for their efforts.

Brewster Fire Department, Putnam’s busiest, will be hosting an open house today at fire department headquarters.
