POUGHKEEPSIE – For months, the 300 block of Main Street was nearly impassable day and night as a result of a group of people loitering in front of a few buildings, drinking alcohol and gambling in dice games.  On Thursday night, the sidewalks were clear after police cracked down on the activities on Wednesday.  A man wanted for a felony charge was arrested during the Main Street cleanup.

During the November 4 crackdown, the City of Poughkeepsie Police Neighborhood Recovery Unit (NRU), assisted by the New York State Police Troop K Community Stabilization Unit, cleaned up the block.  The 8:15 p.m. sweep resulted in four arrests and the seizure of illegal drugs.

Police observed the gambling, drug use, public urination, and other quality-of-life issues when they arrived Wednesday night and began making arrests.  One suspect, 19-year-old Joshua Cornwall, tried to run from the area but was unsuccessful.  When officers apprehended and searched him, they found a quantity of crack cocaine in his possession.  Further investigation revealed that police wanted Cornwall on a warrant for felony criminal mischief.  He was taken into custody on the warrant and also charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a controlled substance and a loitering violation.  Officers issued appearance tickets to the three other individuals for their alleged loitering violations.
