CARMEL – A long-planned project to improve safety at the intersection of Stoneleigh Avenue and Drewville Road near Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel is moving forward, with a new roundabout and other roadway improvements planned.
Congressman Mike Lawler (R, NY-17) welcomed Federal Highway Administration Administrator Sean McMaster to Putnam County to highlight progress on the project, which will include improved sightlines, upgraded drainage and other safety enhancements.
The intersection serves thousands of motorists daily and is less than a quarter mile from the hospital, making it an important route for patients, hospital staff and emergency responders.
“Getting this project to the construction phase has taken years of work from our local, state, and federal partners,” Lawler said. He said the improvements are intended to make roads safer and provide reliable access to the hospital.
Derek Anderson, president of Northwell’s Putnam Hospital and Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, said the upgrades should improve traffic flow and make access to the hospital more reliable.
“In health care, that matters because during an emergency, every second counts,” Anderson said.
Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) called the planned roundabout a milestone for Putnam County, which he said has not previously had one. Slater said he secured $1.5 million in state funding for the project.
The project is being funded through federal, state and county resources, with the federal government covering 80 percent of the total cost, according to Lawler’s office.
