One of the most revealing moments in Keeping Up With the Kardashians never reached viewers, according to an executive producer who recalled a heated confrontation involving Kanye West and the Kardashian family.

In the upcoming biography Citizen Kim, writer Jonathan Van Meter examines the personal life of reality star Kim Kardashian, including private moments that never appeared on the long-running reality series. Although the show’s 20th and final season offered glimpses of the breakdown of Kim’s marriage to West, executive producer Farnaz Farjam revealed that a significant part of the story was left out of the broadcast.

In October 2020, the Kardashian-Jenner family gathered to celebrate Caitlyn Jenner’s birthday. The gathering came after several turbulent months, during which West launched an unsuccessful presidential campaign and later accused Kim and her mother, Kris Jenner, of attempting to “lock me up.”

Farjam recalled that West attended the celebration at Caitlyn’s house alongside Kim before turning his attention to the family.

“Kanye came to Caitlyn’s house with Kim and he just started ripping into Kris and the family and questioning them about not voting for him,” Farjam said in an excerpt published by The Cut. “He just made it all about himself. That whole 30-minute battle was very telling, but we had to edit it out.”

By the time the episode aired on E! in June 2021, Kim had already filed for divorce from West after nearly seven years of marriage.

Although the confrontation itself was excluded, viewers saw its emotional aftermath. Kim broke down in tears while speaking with her sisters Kourtney Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner about the apparent end of her marriage.

“I just honestly can’t do this anymore,” she said through sobs. “I feel like a f—ing failure and it’s, like, a third f—ing marriage. … Yeah, I feel like a f—ing loser.”

Despite the difficulties between the couple, West’s wish to move their four children from Calabasas to Wyoming appeared to be a decisive factor in their separation.

“He should have a wife that supports his every move and travels with him and does everything and I can’t,” Kim told her sisters.

In Citizen Kim, Van Meter describes the couple’s relationship as having endured numerous “bumpy moments” before reaching the point “when the wheels finally came off.”

The deterioration of their marriage had begun earlier, in February 2020, when West suffered from a severe case of COVID-19 for weeks. Kim cared for him as he recovered. According to her account, however, West subsequently left for his ranch in Wyoming without Kim or their children and remained there for months.

“I got him out of my bed,” Kim joked to Van Meter, whom she first met when he profiled her for Vogue in 2019. “He never came back!”
