Michael Jackson’s Super Bowl XXVII halftime performance remains one of the most memorable moments in the event’s history, despite taking place away from the football field. The King of Pop transformed the halftime show into a major entertainment spectacle, redefining its place in popular culture. More than three decades later, the story behind that landmark performance will be explored in a new documentary.
Titled Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl, the film will examine Jackson’s preparations for the celebrated performance at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. It will include previously unseen footage of the singer and his team, offering a closer look at how they helped turn the Super Bowl halftime show into one of pop culture’s most significant events.
Before Jackson’s appearance, halftime was generally viewed as a break for spectators to visit the restroom or grab another drink. Entertainment typically consisted of marching bands, large commercial activations or performances by artists whose biggest years were behind them. Jackson’s show changed that perception, establishing halftime as a prime opportunity for major music stars to perform before a massive audience.
Since then, performers across different genres have taken the stage, including rock legend Paul McCartney and rap superstar Kendrick Lamar.
The documentary is being directed by American filmmaker Bao Nguyen, whose previous work includes The Greatest Night in Pop, a film chronicling the creation of the iconic song “We Are the World.” The production team also includes John Branca, who recently worked on Michael, the biographical film about the singer, alongside Nguyen.
The upcoming documentary follows the release of Michael by less than a year. The biopic featured Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, portraying the pop legend. The film earned more than a billion dollars at the box office, ranking among the highest-grossing movies of 2026. A sequel is already in development.
Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl is scheduled to debut in January 2027, exclusively on Hulu and ESPN. Details about its release in Latin America have not yet been announced, although Disney+ is considered a likely platform for the region.
