CARMEL – One of the most heavily used facilities in the greater Carmel area is the Carmel High School gymnasium and according to school officials, water damage to the gymnasium floor has forced the closure of the facility.
Superintendent Michael Plotkin reported on Sunday, “The timing is especially unfortunate, and the damaged area must be repaired before competitive play can resume in the gym.”
Plotkin said he realizes “how much our gymnasium means to students, staff, and the entire community. The gym is central to athletic contests, physical education, school events, and other activities. The situation affects many people.”
The superintendent noted that district officials were working to set up a timeline for addressing the damage.
“Before we can decide the proper repair, however, we need to understand what caused it. The district is working with architects, engineers, and maintenance staff to assess the affected area and investigate the source of the water. One possibility we are examining is groundwater beneath the floor and building; that has not yet been confirmed,” he said.
According to Plotkin, the district’s goal is to “address both the damage and its underlying cause so that the gym can safely serve its intended purposes over the long term. As we evaluate the options, we will consider the needs of those who use the space as well as the financial implications for the district,” he said.
Members of the Board of Education will be discussing the problem at Tuesday’s meeting.
