POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County officials want to make sure that the upcoming elections run smoothly so they put their heads together this week with that goal in mind.

Republican County Elections Commissioner Erik Haight called the planning routine and said it had nothing to do with what the Trump Administration has been suggesting about obstructing elections in some areas.

“We want to make sure that not only are the voters safe but we want to make sure they feel safe and let them know we put a lot of preparation into every election and just feel it is important that voters know their elections are free and fair, and that they will have unfettered access to their franchise and unfettered access to exercising their right to vote,” he told Mid-Hudson News.

Sheriff Kirk Imperati said he takes his public safety responsibilities very seriously, “and that includes helping to ensure that every voter in Dutchess County is able to exercise their right to vote in a safe and peaceful manner.”

Early voting begins on Saturday, October 24 with the general election on November 3.
