CARMEL – Relief may be in the offing for residents of East Lake Boulevard in Mahopac who are concerned about speeding vehicles, pedestrian safety, heavy traffic, and parking issues.

East Lake Boulevard is a county road serving a densely populated area that is home to St. John’s Church, Mahopac VFW, CVS Pharmacy, as well as the recently opened Waterfront Bar and Grill in addition to dozens of residences.

Last month, scores of residents attended a Carmel Town Board meeting demanding that the 30-mph speed limit be reduced since they charged that speeding heavy traffic, minimal parking and a lack of sidewalks have resulted in extremely dangerous conditions.

More than 150 residents signed petitions presented to the town council requesting relief.

Supervisor Michael Cazzari told attendees that East Lake Blvd. is under Putnam County’s authority and that he had already asked the county to lower the speed limit to 25 mph.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the Putnam Legislature approved a resolution asking the New York State Department of Transportation to conduct a study addressing residents’ concerns.

Legislator Erin Crowley, a Mahopac resident, called the road “an accident waiting to happen.”

She said drivers speed through the area, many ignore a stop sign, and parking is “atrocious. A study will help determine how to make East Lake Blvd. safer for everyone,” said Crowley.

The lawmakers are asking the DOT to conduct the survey from May 31 through Labor Day of next year which are peak times when traffic is the heaviest throughout Lake Mahopac.
