New York — Madonna made her return to the MTV Video Music Awards stage for the first time in 23 years, opening the 2026 ceremony with Sabrina Carpenter and Charli xcx.
The performance came after the telecast was delayed by 20 minutes because of an NFL game.
Madonna also welcomed Debi Mazar and Julia Garner during the performance, while Seth Rogan, Andrew Watt and Sombr made cameo appearances.
The 2026 VMAs arrived with Madonna among the ceremony’s leading nominees, earning 13 nominations. Taylor Swift followed with 11, while Sabrina Carpenter received 9 and Ariana Grande had 8 nominations.
