Singapore — Sixteen-year-old guitarist Nene Royal is taking the next step in her fast-rising career, with an opening performance for Avenged Sevenfold in Singapore added to her growing list of achievements.
Royal is scheduled to perform ahead of the American metal band at its Singapore concert on October 13. The concert promoter and Royal announced the appearance Thursday on Instagram, introducing the young musician as a special guest.
The opportunity comes just months after Royal was performing at night markets in Thailand. Her career trajectory changed after she appeared on the 21st season of America’s Got Talent, where she performed The Cranberries’ “Zombie.”
Her audition featured singing, guitar playing and headbanging, giving the performance the energy of a rock concert rather than a conventional talent-show appearance. The performance quickly spread online and helped make Royal one of the season’s early fan favorites.
Royal eventually won the competition, raising her profile both in Thailand and internationally.
Her upcoming Singapore appearance also has personal importance. Avenged Sevenfold has been a significant musical influence on the young guitarist, making the chance to perform alongside the band a notable moment in her developing career.
The Singapore concert will allow Royal to perform for an audience beyond the television viewers who followed her America’s Got Talent run. It also puts her on the bill with an established metal band as she begins taking her career beyond Thailand.
For an artist who only recently began building an audience through street performances, Royal’s rise has happened quickly. Her combination of vocals, guitar ability and energetic stage presence helped her distinguish herself on television, while her competition victory has created new opportunities on the international concert circuit.
Her October 13 performance with Avenged Sevenfold will mark another significant step in that journey.
