London — A routine street performance in central London took an unexpected turn Friday when Coldplay frontman Chris Martin joined a musician performing one of the band’s best-known songs.
Ahn Ji-hoon, a South Korean street performer who uses the name HannyJunee, was performing in Trafalgar Square when Martin unexpectedly approached as he played “Viva la Vida.”
Ji-hoon initially did not realize that the man in a hat and sunglasses walking toward him was Coldplay’s lead singer.
The musician later told CNN that the encounter felt “like a movie.” He said the crowd had chosen “Viva la Vida” as the final song of his performance.
As the song began, Martin stepped into the performance.
Ji-hoon said he first thought the stranger was simply another Coldplay fan who had stopped to enjoy the music. He continued playing until Martin began singing, at which point he recognized the familiar voice.
Martin’s surprise appearance is consistent with his history of spontaneous performances and interactions with fans. The Coldplay frontman has previously performed in unexpected public settings outside the band’s regular concert environment.
For Ji-hoon, the encounter was especially memorable because Martin’s identity was not immediately apparent.
The performance unfolded in Trafalgar Square, one of London’s most recognizable public spaces, transforming an ordinary street performance into an impromptu meeting with a major music star.
Ji-hoon said the man initially seemed to be there simply to listen. It was only after Martin started singing that he realized who had joined him.
The pair continued performing “Viva la Vida,” turning the street appearance into an unexpected Coldplay collaboration.
For Ji-hoon, the most surprising part was not only that a famous musician joined his performance, but that Martin did so without immediately revealing who he was.
Video of the moment was captured and later attracted attention online, leaving the street musician with an unexpected memory from his London performance.
