US President Donald Trump told the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday that his administration is seeking “fundamental change” in Cuba and said the island’s communist regime is under unprecedented pressure.
“My administration is also seeking fundamental change in the situation in Cuba, where the communist regime is under enormous pressure, the greatest pressure it has ever faced. It is an absolutely failed state. And it will fall,” Trump declared during his speech in New York, according to Infobae.
The US president added that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is directly involved in the talks with Havana.
“Marco Rubio is leading the negotiations. We’ll see what happens,” Trump said, while warning that Washington will not allow Cuba to become a haven for foreign adversaries who could pose a threat to the United States.
The White House had anticipated that Cuba would feature in Trump’s speech before the UN, at a time when Washington is maintaining a policy of economic and diplomatic pressure on the Havana regime.
Trump also accused Cuban authorities of cultivating ties with organizations he described as “subversive and radical” within the United States, and asserted: “Freedom is coming to Cuba.”
The remarks came while the Cuban delegation was present in the General Assembly hall. The Havana delegation, headed by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, left the room during Trump’s criticism of the communist regime, according to reports.
Trump’s words once again place Cuba among the priorities of US foreign policy and increase the pressure on the Havana regime, which faces a profound economic, energy, and social crisis while maintaining political control of the island. @ADNCuba
