Yet another Canadian woman was allegedly euthanized against her will, and Americans should take note.

Brigitte Kranendonk told the Daily Mail that her 83-year-old Christian grandmother, Brigitte Stegemann, was not of sound mind when she consented to receive what Canada calls Medical Assistance in Dying, or MAID.

Government guidelines require MAID patients to have a “grievous and irremediable medical condition” and to be mentally competent to make the request. But Stegemann, Kranendonk said, “got every question wrong” on the cognitive test the doctor administered, including how many siblings she had and how many of them were still alive.

Doctors nevertheless gave Stegemann the lethal injection on July 10 in Ontario, moments after she reportedly ripped out her IV, screaming, “I don’t want the death shot!”

Now, Kranendonk is appealing to the Chief Coroner’s Office, Belleville Police, and the patient ombudsman to determine if her grandmother was unlawfully euthanized.

What Happened

  • Stegemann received a stage four stomach cancer diagnosis in February, but according to Kranendonk, the prognosis was still uncertain. Further, when they discussed MAID in the past, Kranendonk said her grandmother had firmly rejected the idea due to her Christian beliefs.
  • The cognitive test questions did not sit well with Kranendonk. “None of the answers could be proven, unless I was there,” Kranendonk said. Yet mid-test, the doctor asked her to leave the room, adding to her confusion. Soon after, the doctor declared her grandmother fit for MAID.
  • Two days before Stegemann was scheduled to die, Kranendonk discussed what would happen with her in detail. Her grandmother reportedly told her she’d made a mistake and burst into tears. On the day of the procedure, the doctors never received Stegemann’s express consent before proceeding to kill her.

Not a One-Off

This isn’t the first controversy over MAID in Canada. Earlier this year, another case made headlines involving a woman whose husband may have coerced her into accepting MAID against her wishes.

Meanwhile, doctors reportedly offered another elderly woman MAID last year as the first line of treatment for her back pain.

The alarm bells are blaring, but plans are still in place for Canada to expand MAID access next March beyond those with a terminal illness to those whose sole underlying condition is mental illness.

Why It Matters

What’s happening in Canada today could be America’s reality tomorrow if voters don’t stay vigilant as to what lobbyists and lawmakers are promoting in their states.

  • Thirteen states and the District of Columbia have already legalized medically assisted suicide, and another 16 states considered legalizing it this year. While most of those efforts failed, measures in Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania are still pending.
  • Failure is not a deterrent for those pushing these bills. Lobbyists have consistently proposed measures to legalize medically assisted suicide in states where they have previously failed-even in solid red states, like Indiana. Lawmakers in Arizona and North Carolina have weighed the idea nearly every year for the last decade.
  • In New Jersey, where medically assisted suicide is legal, lawmakers are considering removing current safeguards in the process to make it even swifter. Senate Bill 710 would allow doctors to waive the requirement of a second verbal request for medically assisted suicide and shorten a critical waiting period from 15 days to just 48 hours if “with reasonable medical certainty, the patient is not expected to survive for 15 days,” per just one physician’s assessment.

Take Action

Conservatives living in red states may think they are safe from the encroaching threat of medically assisted suicide. They’re wrong.

One election is all it takes to fundamentally change a legislature. That’s why it is imperative that conservatives remain civically active and engaged at the local level.
