CARMEL- Despite dark, dank skies and a steady rain, more than 200 people gathered beneath a large pavilion at Camarda Park in Carmel Sunday to participate in Putnam’s 7th annual Prayer Walk for First Responders.

The memorial honored 9/11 hero Stephen Driscoll, a New York City Police Department Emergency Services Unit officer from Lake Carmel who died while rescuing people at the World Trade Center.

Driscoll’s sister, Gail Driscoll-Silke, recalled her brother as a man who always desired to help others.  “Stephen, who was born on the 4th of July, died just doing that,” she said.

Marianne Chaluisan, a resident of Mahopac who comes from a police family background, organized the event describing firefighters, police officers, nurses or EMS providers as “dedicated public servants who aid our community in so many ways. They are truly our unsung heroes.”

State Assemblyman Matt Slater, Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne, Pastor Andrew Columbia of Mt. Carmel Bible Church, and Carmel Police Chief Anthony Hoffmann also offered remarks praising first responders.
