MINNEAPOLIS — A Minnesota man who sprayed Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., with vinegar during a Minneapolis town hall earlier this year was sentenced Thursday to 14 months in federal prison.

Anthony Kazmierczak, 56, received the sentence nearly eight months after the Jan. 27 assault, which unfolded as Omar was speaking before an audience at the public event.

Witnesses said Kazmierczak was sitting among attendees when he suddenly stood and sprayed liquid toward Omar from a syringe while accusing the congresswoman of “splitting Minnesota apart.”

Omar’s security personnel immediately tackled Kazmierczak and restrained him before turning him over to Minneapolis police officers, who placed him under arrest.

Authorities subsequently determined that the substance sprayed at Omar was a mixture containing vinegar. Omar was not injured in the attack.

Kazmierczak later told U.S. District Judge Joan N. Ericksen that he had little recollection of what happened during the incident, according to the Associated Press.

“It’s fuzzy,” Kazmierczak said when asked during an earlier court hearing what he remembered about the assault.

The Jan. 27 incident was brought under federal jurisdiction because Omar is a member of Congress.

Thursday’s sentencing concludes the criminal prosecution stemming from the attack, with Kazmierczak ordered to serve 14 months in prison for his actions at the Minneapolis town hall.
