NEW YORK — Ben Shelton delivered a stunning five-set upset of defending U.S. Open champion Carlos Alcaraz, winning 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7) in a marathon quarterfinal that finished at 3:33 a.m. Wednesday.
The battle lasted four hours and 28 minutes, making it the latest match to finish in U.S. Open history. Shelton’s victory also sends him into an all-American semifinal against Frances Tiafoe, creating another opportunity for American men’s tennis to end its wait for a Grand Slam champion dating back to 2003.
Alcaraz had arrived with a 13-0 Grand Slam record against American men, but Shelton repeatedly prevented the defending champion from taking control of the match. Alcaraz also appeared to face physical difficulties as the contest wore on.
Shelton credited the encouragement of his coaches, family, friends and the New York crowd with helping him endure the grueling battle and secure the biggest victory of his career.
