All five people killed in Sunday’s Amazon cargo jet crash at Miami International Airport were inside an airport shuttle van that was struck after the aircraft failed to stop before reaching the end of the runway, authorities said.
The van was used to transport crews responsible for cleaning aircraft, according to the Associated Press.
The cargo jet overran the runway and slammed into the van while it was still on airport property. The aircraft continued moving after the collision, broke through an airport fence and struck an SUV on a nearby city street.
Five additional people were injured in the crash.
Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said the jet’s pilot and co-pilot have since been released from the hospital.
Two other people remained in critical condition, while another was listed in stable condition, Cordero-Stutz said.
The disclosure that all five fatalities occurred inside the shuttle van provides new detail about where the victims were when the aircraft left the runway.
Authorities continue investigating why the Amazon cargo jet was unable to stop before overrunning the runway and striking the ground vehicle.
