President Donald Trump amplified the idea of changing New Mexico’s name to “New America” on Sunday, first sharing a modified state map and later posting that the proposed name would be “more prestigious and beautiful.”

President Donald Trump renewed his support Sunday evening for changing the name of New Mexico to “New America,” following an earlier social media post depicting the state with “Mexico” crossed out and replaced by “America.”
“Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the great vote cheating states of all time, to NEW AMERICA. So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!!” Trump wrote Sunday evening.
The statement followed an earlier Truth Social post in which Trump shared a map of New Mexico showing the word “Mexico” crossed out and “America” substituted beneath it, effectively changing the displayed name to “New America.”
Trump had not signed an executive order changing New Mexico’s name as of Sunday, and the posts did not specify whether the president intended to pursue a formal renaming process.
The suggestion follows other geographic name changes Trump has pursued during his second term.
On Aug. 27, Trump signed an executive order directing that Lake Ontario be referred to as “Lake America” by the federal government. The order followed escalating trade tensions with Canada and directed federal agencies to implement the new name in government documents and communications.
Trump also acted on geographic names immediately after returning to the White House for his second term.
On Jan. 20, 2025, he signed an executive order titled “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness.” The order directed the federal government to rename the U.S. portion of the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” and restore the name Mount McKinley to North America’s highest peak, which had been federally known as Denali since 2015. Denali National Park and Preserve retained its existing name under the order.
The New Mexico posts continue that pattern of Trump publicly advocating American-themed geographic names, although no formal action changing the state’s name had been announced Sunday.
