The Houston Texans had an 11-6 record last season and were a wild card team in the AFC. Houston won a playoff game for the second straight season. They defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road in the AFC Wild Card Round, but then they lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC Divisional Round. The defense was not the issue for the Texans last season.

The issue was the performance of quarterback C.J. Stroud in both postseason games. He looked lost. As he enters his fourth NFL season as quarterback of the Texans, there are questions about whether or not he is going to receive a massive contract extension. During the 2025 NFL season, he completed 64.5% of his passes for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Stroud also rushed for 209 yards on 48 carries and one touchdown, along with averaging 4.4 yards per carry. He played in 14 games last season and missed three of them.

Texans general manager Nick Caserio spoke to the media on Tuesday about the future of Stroud with the franchise. Caserio said,

“We’ve had productive discussions. The reality is we will either get it figured out before the season starts & if we don’t then it will be something we address in the offseason. Whenever it happens, it happens.”

If it this does not work out for Stroud, it would be interesting to see what Houston what do at quarterback after the 2026 NFL season. Head coach DeMeco Ryan has built a Super Bowl caliber defense with the Texans. Stroud might be the reason why this team may not be able to take it to another level. If he signs a contract before the season, Houston is taking a major risk. They are better off letting him playout the season and have him perform and then pay him also.
