MIDDLETOWN – There is light at the end of the tunnel for the opening of the new Middletown City Courthouse.

The former federal courthouse on South Street in Middletown should be ready for its new life in the weeks ahead.

It has taken years for city and state officials to work out the plans for the reconfigured and expanded building and now Common Council President Miguel Rodrigues told the opening is months away.

“We were finalizing with the furniture, and once the furniture is installed and ready and the Office of Court Administration puts everything together, we will hopefully open soon,” he said. “Our goal was to be summertime, but with everything from Albany, security procedures and everything else, we intent to have it open before the end of the year.”

It has taken both sides years to come to terms with the size of courtrooms and cost of construction and remodeling of the building.
