Iran’s acting defense minister is signaling that Tehran may be preparing new military capabilities for use against its adversaries, saying the country’s defense industry has “surprises” that will be revealed when the time is right.

Brig. Gen. Majid Ebn al-Reza made the comments in remarks carried by Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, framing the warning around advances being made by Iranian scientists, young people and the country’s defense sector.

“Everyone, and especially the enemies, should know that they will become aware of Iran’s surprises in due time,” Ebn al-Reza was quoted as saying.

He declined to elaborate on what those capabilities might involve, arguing that disclosing them in advance would undermine their purpose.

“We should not talk about the surprises now, but Iranian knowledge, the Iranian youth, and the things being carried out in the defense industries will, God willing, bring good surprises,” he reportedly added.

The comments come as Iran faces mounting pressure from the United States on both the economic and military fronts.

President Donald Trump said earlier this week that the Iranian government is “not paying their troops” and is “in deep trouble,” portraying Tehran as increasingly strained following the launch of the U.S. Treasury Department’s Operation Economic Outcast.

The sanctions campaign is intended to intensify financial pressure on Iran and further isolate the regime economically.

Against that backdrop, Ebn al-Reza’s remarks appear designed to project confidence in Iran’s military capabilities despite the growing pressure.

The acting defense minister did not identify any specific weapons system, operational plan or technological development behind his warning, leaving the nature of the promised “surprises” unclear.

His comments nevertheless add to the increasingly confrontational rhetoric surrounding Iran as Washington seeks to weaken Tehran economically while Iranian officials continue emphasizing the country’s ability to develop and field new military capabilities.

For now, Iran is offering no details beyond the assurance that its adversaries will eventually learn what the defense ministry has been preparing.
