PEEKSKILL- Two pet dogs are alive today thanks to the rapid response and quick action of firefighters who ran into a smoke-filled basement and rescued the frightened animals.

At 3 p.m., Peekskill Fire Department personnel were dispatched to a home on Paulding Street for a smoke alarm activation. While in route, crews were advised that alarms had been triggered in multiple zones of the building.

First arriving units were advised by the tenants of the residence that there was an active fire in the basement, with two pet dogs trapped inside.

Firefighters donned breathing gear and entered the basement extinguishing the fire within minutes before locating the two dogs, removing them and reuniting the dogs with their family.

Cause of the fire was considered to be accidental resulting from a malfunction of a charging E-bike battery. No injuries were reported and all units returned to service by 6 p.m.

Fire officials said due to the involvement of a Lithium-ion battery powered device, the battery remnants were packed into a container designed for battery containment. The battery parts were then transported off-site to a hazardous materials recovery facility, by fire department personnel.
