A new ChatGPT integration can search, summarize, compose and send messages through Apple’s Messages app on Macs after users grant extensive permissions, creating new privacy questions as OpenAI expands its ability to interact with personal data stored on Apple devices.

ChatGPT can now interact directly with Apple’s Messages app on Mac computers, giving users the ability to have the artificial intelligence system search conversations, summarize exchanges, draft responses and send messages after granting it access to their on-device message history.
The capability represents a significant expansion of ChatGPT’s integration with macOS because Messages can contain years of highly personal conversations, contact information and other private material.
According to Bloomberg, the feature allows ChatGPT to read and take actions inside Messages rather than simply generating text that a user must manually copy into another application.
OpenAI said the integration is permission-based and does not automatically gain access to an Apple user’s messages.
Users must complete multiple opt-in steps before ChatGPT can interact with the app, including approvals within both the ChatGPT application and Apple’s own macOS privacy controls.
When the feature is first activated, ChatGPT displays a permission notice informing the user that the application will be able to access message history stored on the computer.
Users must then make additional changes in the Mac’s System Settings, including granting ChatGPT Full Disk Access.
They must also authorize access to contact names and allow the application to use automation capabilities needed to control Messages.
The setup resembles permissions required by other AI-based computer automation products, including Codex Computer Use.
OpenAI said the Messages integration operates locally on the Mac and uses existing macOS technologies, including AppleScript and Accessibility tools, to communicate with and control the application.
The company also said it does not create a comprehensive index of all of a user’s messages.
Those distinctions may become important as privacy advocates and Apple customers examine how much information could potentially be exposed when an AI system is granted access to one of the most personal applications on a computer.
Apple has spent years emphasizing privacy as a distinguishing characteristic of its hardware and software, particularly protections surrounding private communications.
The possibility that message contents could be processed through OpenAI systems is consequently likely to attract scrutiny, even though users must affirmatively grant the permissions necessary for the feature to operate.
The integration also arrives amid an unusual relationship between Apple and OpenAI.
Apple has filed a federal lawsuit against OpenAI alleging that the AI company improperly obtained confidential information and trade secrets related to Apple hardware development.
In its legal complaint, Apple accused OpenAI of widespread misconduct involving personnel and business partners.
“This much is clear, however: at every level, from members of its Technical Staff to its Chief Hardware Officer, and in coordination with business partners, OpenAI has been stealing Apple’s trade secrets and confidential information,” Apple said in court documents.
Those allegations remain part of litigation and represent Apple’s claims against OpenAI.
Against that backdrop, ChatGPT’s new ability to interact with Messages creates a striking contrast: Apple is accusing OpenAI of improperly obtaining proprietary corporate information while Mac users can now voluntarily grant ChatGPT access to their personal communications.
The Messages integration is not OpenAI’s first attempt to work with sensitive information stored on Apple devices.
ChatGPT previously added the ability to analyze information from Apple’s Health app on iPhones and iPads.
In that instance, iOS and iPadOS require users to specifically authorize the sharing of their health information with ChatGPT before the system can access it.
OpenAI has also developed integrations with several other applications on Mac computers.
ChatGPT can interact with programs including Xcode, Notes and Terminal, giving the assistant access to information or workflows within those applications when users provide the required permissions.
Messages, however, presents a different privacy dimension because conversations can include personal relationships, financial discussions, medical information, passwords, travel plans, business communications and other sensitive material accumulated over years.
The ability to search across those conversations could make ChatGPT considerably more useful as a personal assistant.
A user could potentially ask the system to locate an earlier conversation, summarize a lengthy text thread, find information contained in messages, prepare a response or send one without manually navigating through the Messages application.
Those same capabilities mean the scope of access being granted is broader than what is required for a conventional chatbot operating only inside its own window.
Apple itself is developing similar functionality for its next-generation Siri technology.
The company’s forthcoming AI system is expected to be able to search messages and other information stored across a user’s device, potentially allowing Siri to answer questions using personal context without requiring users to manually locate the underlying information.
Apple has viewed that type of deep, device-level access as a potential advantage over outside AI assistants because it controls the operating system and can design privacy protections around the information stored within it.
ChatGPT’s new Messages integration narrows some of that advantage by allowing a third-party AI assistant to perform comparable actions through permissions already available in macOS.
The integration is not automatic, however. A Mac user who does not enable the feature and grant the required operating-system permissions does not provide ChatGPT with that level of access to Messages.
That distinction places much of the privacy decision directly in the hands of individual users.
Those who activate it gain substantially more automation and personal-assistant functionality, while also granting ChatGPT access to one of the most sensitive collections of information on their Macs.
The feature therefore illustrates the tradeoff increasingly accompanying AI assistants as they move beyond answering questions and begin acting inside computers: the more useful they become at searching, interpreting and managing personal information, the more consequential the permissions required to make those capabilities possible.
Additional details about the integration are available in Bloomberg’s report.
