CARMEL – Higher prices at the pump, back to school shopping and new car purchases are fueling Putnam sales tax coffers as revenue generated by the county’s 8.375 percent tax has generated more than $18.5 million during the past three months or $4.6 million more than June and July 2025.
The Putnam Legislature’s Audit Committee will receive the news at tonight’s meeting.
The $2.2 million increase in July marked the highest increase in sales tax revenue for a month year-over-year since the $2.5 infusion in December 2025 and the $2.9 million increase in May 2020 which was the most ever.
Putnam will now be distributing a part of the sales tax to its nine municipalities.
Carmel’s share for July totals $406,414 followed by $156,146 for Kent; $139,696 for Patterson; $87,405 for Philipstown; $142,371 for Putnam Valley and $188,222 for Southeast.
Putnam’s three villages also received added revenue: $30,358 for Brewster; $24,039 for Cold Spring and $7,553 for Nelsonville.
