Sheriff Brian Hess addressed the dedication with the sheriff’s widow, Janice, at his side

COLD SPRING- Today marks the first anniversary of the passing of former Putnam Sheriff Kevin McConville.

The 68-year-old lifelong Cold Spring resident lost his battle with cancer leaving a void throughout Putnam County since McConville was more than a trusted law enforcement officer but also a mentor, a colleague, and friend to many.

On the eve of his passing, family, friends, and county officials gathered at the former Nelsonville FD headquarters and renamed the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office substation off Route 301 in McConville’s honor.

Putnam’s current Sheriff Brian Hess remembered his predecessor: “Sheriff McConville spent his entire life in Putnam County, where he raised his family, served his community, and rose through the ranks of law enforcement before becoming our sheriff. Today is an incredibly special day as we dedicate this building in his honor.”

County Executive Kevin Byrne said the “Kevin J. McConville Putnam County Sheriff’s Department Nelsonville Station is more than a name on a building — it is a lasting tribute to a man who devoted his life to public safety, to his community, and to the values of integrity and service. Future generations of deputies, residents, and visitors will see his name and be reminded of the standard he set and the legacy he left behind.”
