LIBERTY -“Get out! You are not welcome in our community.”

That was Liberty Police Chief Stephen D’Agata issuing a warning to anyone who violates the law in the Village during a press conference on Thursday. He gave details about the arrest of 16 people charged with sex crimes and failing to comply with New York’s sex offender registry rules. The arrests followed an investigation into local sex offenses and suspected registry violations across the village.
“Operation ‘Dangerous DMs,’ was a prolonged undercover investigation conducted over several months targeting adults who use the internet and social media to seek sexual contact with individuals they believed were children,” D’Agata said.
That was one of two investigations.
The second effort, known as ‘Operation Registry Repo’ focused on registered sex offenders residing in the Village of Liberty and their compliance with the New York State sex offender Registration Act.
Sullivan County District Attorney Brian Conaty had a message for parents:  “I ask that all parents be proactive about educating their children about the dangers of the internet, and to take whatever steps are necessary to monitor their online presence.”
