President Donald Trump announced a sweeping new economic campaign against Iran on Wednesday evening, declaring that the United States will pursue what he described as the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY” and warning foreign governments and companies against providing Tehran with financial or commercial assistance.
Trump characterized the initiative as a new phase of “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale,” saying the pressure campaign will target not only Iran but also countries that permit their financial institutions, businesses, airports or government agencies to provide economic support to the Iranian government.
The president said the measures are intended to shut down avenues through which Iran could obtain money, conduct oil transactions, move cash or otherwise maintain access to the international economy.
“This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY,” Trump said.
In his full statement announcing the initiative, Trump said Iran had been given an opportunity to reach an agreement with the United States but had failed to do so.
“No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a Deal than me. TRAGICALLY, for them, they have failed to take it.
Therefore, today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.
Their navy is gone, their air force is destroyed, their military factories are now rubble, their currency is worthless, and their country is hanging by a thread.
Today, I am also announcing that ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences.
Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are. This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY, and we need all of our Allies to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat.
These maniacs are on the ropes, and these HISTORIC MEASURES will cripple them and their ability to project terror worldwide. IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. President DONALD J. TRUMP”
The announcement broadens the scope of the administration’s pressure campaign by explicitly placing third countries on notice that continued economic dealings benefiting Iran could expose them to U.S. penalties.
Trump specifically identified oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies as activities or mechanisms that must stop.
His warning also extends beyond traditional banking relationships. The president said countries could face economic repercussions if their airports, businesses or government entities provide what he called a “lifeline” to Iran.
Trump presented the economic offensive as the next stage of U.S. pressure after describing Iran’s military capabilities and economy as severely weakened.
He asserted that Iran’s navy is gone, its air force has been destroyed, its military production facilities have been reduced to rubble and its currency has become effectively worthless. He said the country’s condition now leaves it “hanging by a thread.”
The president also called on U.S. allies to support the campaign and participate in Iran’s economic isolation.
According to Trump, the objective is not limited to weakening Iran’s economy but also restricting Tehran’s ability to finance or project what he described as terrorism around the world.
The president concluded by reiterating one of his central positions toward Tehran: that Iran will not be permitted to acquire a nuclear weapon.
The announcement signals that the administration intends to use access to the U.S. economy and financial system as leverage against governments, institutions and businesses that continue helping Iran economically, with Trump promising “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences” for countries that fail to comply.
