President Donald Trump reaffirmed Monday that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains the central objective of the United States as the conflict with Tehran continues following renewed fighting and the breakdown of negotiations.
Trump made the administration’s position explicit in a Truth Social post, declaring that the issue remains his highest priority in dealing with Iran.
“The number one Goal is, and always will be, that Iran cannot have, in any way, shape, or form, a Nuclear Weapon. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote.
The statement comes as Washington continues pressing Tehran to make a permanent commitment never to possess a nuclear weapon, a condition Iran has so far refused to accept despite sustained military pressure from the United States.
The confrontation follows a series of major U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran and its nuclear infrastructure.
Last year, the United States carried out Operation Midnight Hammer, a series of strikes intended to cripple Iran’s nuclear program. Trump subsequently declared the operation a success and said Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been destroyed.
The conflict later reignited in February, when the United States and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Following that escalation, the war entered a period of nominal ceasefire as diplomatic efforts sought to establish a more durable settlement.
Those negotiations ultimately failed to produce an agreement, and hostilities resumed.
At the center of the dispute has been Trump’s insistence that any lasting arrangement must prevent Tehran from ever developing or possessing a nuclear weapon.
Iran has resisted accepting that condition despite continuing U.S. military and economic pressure.
Trump’s Monday statement leaves little ambiguity about what his administration considers the defining issue in the conflict.
Rather than framing the war primarily around territory or other regional disputes, Trump again identified Iran’s nuclear capabilities as the fundamental concern driving U.S. policy.
The administration’s position follows Operation Midnight Hammer and subsequent U.S.-Israeli strikes that were intended to weaken Iran’s ability to advance its nuclear program.
While Trump said after last year’s operation that the program had been destroyed, the renewed conflict and continuing negotiations have kept Iran’s future nuclear capabilities at the center of U.S. strategy.
The latest declaration also comes after weeks in which a ceasefire offered the possibility of reducing hostilities before negotiations collapsed.
With fighting now resumed, Trump is maintaining the same core demand that shaped earlier diplomatic efforts: Iran must not be permitted to acquire a nuclear weapon under any circumstances.
“The number one Goal is, and always will be,” Trump wrote, underscoring that the nuclear issue remains the administration’s primary objective regardless of how the broader conflict develops.
