Washington, D.C., police reportedly arrested at least two people after a driver was assaulted and robbed of a vehicle during an armed carjacking involving a machete in Southeast Washington.
The attack occurred at approximately 4 p.m. Wednesday in a neighborhood near the Maryland state line, according to WJLA.
Metropolitan Police Department officers responded after receiving a report that three Black male suspects had attacked a victim, with at least one of the men allegedly brandishing a machete.
“The suspects assaulted the victim, took the victim’s property, and then fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle,” MPD said in a statement.
The stolen vehicle was identified as a green Ford Escape.
Police later located the SUV and reportedly took at least two suspects into custody at the scene.
Video obtained by TheDMVLive and circulated on social media purportedly shows one of the suspects being taken into custody by MPD officers.
Authorities had not clarified whether the third suspect had also been apprehended.
The incident comes amid an ongoing problem with vehicle thefts involving force or threats in the nation’s capital.
According to Metropolitan Police Department statistics, 89 carjackings have been reported in Washington so far this year.
Police data indicate that 54 of those incidents involved a firearm.
Wednesday’s case differed in that at least one suspect was allegedly armed with a machete when the victim was attacked and the Ford Escape was taken.
The investigation remained ongoing as police worked to determine the status of the third suspect and the circumstances surrounding the carjacking.
