ELLENVILLE – Ellenville Regional Hospital is hoping that area residents will attend the upcoming “Farm-acy” Fresh Produce Distribution this Thursday. The event will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., with fresh fruits and vegetables provided on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. They offer food preparation information as well.
Samantha Riley is the director of the Rural Health Network at the hospital.
“The goal of this program is just to get people to eat more fruits and vegetables, regardless of your socio socioeconomic status,” she said. “It is also, of course, as a food insecurity kind of fighting tool for the community.”
Interestingly, a lot of people don’t know how to prepare and store fresh food.
“We’re finding that some folks don’t even know how to store their produce,” Riley said. “They don’t know if it needs to be room temperature, refrigerated, or if it’s cut versus uncut. How to wash and clean it, like very basic things.”
The people who attend the event don’t even have to get out of their vehicles.
“They drive up around front and very quickly stop their car. We load in a bag with the information, say hello, and send them on their way,” said Riley.
