The Indiana Hoosiers had a historic 2025-2026 college football season by going 16-0 and winning its first national title in school history. Head coach Curt Cignetti won it all in his second season and it remains to be seen what will happen in 2026-2027. A season ago, quarterback Fernando Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy and was the number one overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders.

This upcoming season, a new quarterback will be in charge. Quarterback Josh Hoover played with the TCU Horned Frogs last season. Hoover is 6’2″ and weighs 200 lbs. With TCU a season ago, he completed 65.9% of his passes for 3,472 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Hoover has a chance to make a name for himself this season with the Hoosiers program. Is there a world where Indiana could have back-to-back Heisman Trophy winners as well?

Many different college football writers from the Athletic made cases for many different athletes to win the Heisman Trophy for the 2026 college football season. Justin Williams of the Athletic said about Hoover potentially being a Heisman Trophy winner in 2026,

“We all know Hoover’s shortcomings, thanks to his former coach Sonny Dykes: 13 interceptions in 2025, third-most in the FBS, and 42 total turnovers in 31 starts for TCU. But now Hoover has arrived at the land of milk and honey, playing quarterback for Curt Cignetti and the Hoosiers. We already know Hoover can sling it. If he can clean up the mistakes and lean on “his two new best friends: a great defense and a really good run game,” as Cignetti put it, Indiana could go back-to-back with Heisman-winning QBs.”

It would be some story if Indiana had back-to-back Heisman Trophy winners. Hoover will have big shoes to fill this season for the Hoosiers offense. If he can replicate what Mendoza did a season ago, then Indiana could be on the verge of going back-to-back next season also.
