Spotify said Tuesday it will begin adding “AI Persona” badges to certain artist profiles starting in mid-September, giving listeners a clearer indication of whether an artist presented on the platform is a real person or an artificial intelligence-generated persona.
The move comes as AI-generated music and digital performers become increasingly common across streaming platforms, raising questions about transparency and whether listeners can easily distinguish between human artists and fictional or computer-generated identities.
Spotify said some listeners have expressed concern about artist profiles that appear to represent real people but are instead built around AI-generated personas. The new labeling system is intended to make those identities more visible without requiring listeners to investigate individual artists themselves.
The AI Persona badge will appear in several areas of the platform, including banners and the About sections of artist profiles. It will also be displayed in search results and alongside tracks appearing in playlist rows, allowing users to identify AI Personas while browsing or listening to music.
Beginning Tuesday, artists will be able to disclose through Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI Persona. The company will also conduct its own review of profiles when an artist’s public identity appears to use photorealistic AI-generated imagery.
Artists whose profiles are identified during the review process will be notified. Spotify said those artists will have an opportunity to disclose that they are AI Personas themselves or appeal the platform’s determination.
The company said listeners will be able to distinguish between artists who voluntarily disclosed that they are AI Personas and profiles that were identified through Spotify’s own review process.
Spotify also said AI Persona profiles will generally be excluded from its editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default. However, users who choose to follow those artists will still be able to receive recommendations involving them.
The labeling system will focus on an artist’s public identity rather than how the music itself was produced. That means an artist will not automatically receive an AI Persona label simply because AI tools were used in the creation of a song.
The distinction is intended to separate the use of artificial intelligence as a creative tool from the presentation of an entirely AI-generated identity as the artist behind the music.
AI technology is increasingly being used throughout the music industry for songwriting, production, vocals, artwork and other creative processes. As the technology becomes more sophisticated, listeners can encounter music that combines human creativity with AI-generated elements in ways that may not always be immediately apparent.
Spotify’s approach therefore places the emphasis on transparency about who or what is represented by an artist profile rather than attempting to determine whether every part of a song was created by a human.
The new badges are expected to begin appearing on qualifying profiles in mid-September. Spotify said the initiative is intended to give listeners additional information while allowing artists to be more transparent about their identities.
The company will continue reviewing artist profiles as part of the system, while giving affected artists an opportunity to provide additional information or challenge a decision.
The introduction of AI Persona badges represents another step by a major music platform toward addressing questions surrounding artificial intelligence, authenticity and transparency as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent online.
