NEW YORK – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is extending the public comment period for its proposed cleanup plan at the Wappinger Creek Superfund Site.

The comment period, originally scheduled to end August 21 will now remain open until September 21. It is being extended at the request of the community.

The proposed cleanup plan remedy focuses on the upper portion of the site, targeting the removal of contaminated sediment and soil to prevent downstream migration of mercury and to restore affected areas. This action will allow EPA to begin addressing contamination at the site. EPA will monitor conditions after the work is completed to confirm the effectiveness of this remedy and will use the results to guide a final remedy decision for the site at a later date.

Written comments on the proposed plan can be submitted to Emily Wong, Remedial Project Manager, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 290 Broadway, New York, NY 10007, or by email at .
