MONTICELLO – There were no worries on Sunday that there would be a shortage of bagels in the village of Monticello.
It was so important there were enough bagels that Broadway was closed for most of the day celebrating them during the Monticello Bagel Festival, which brought together community organizations and plenty of food.
“We probably have 30 or 35 different food vendors,” said Alan Kesten, a founding organizer of the festival. “I think every type of eclectic food you could get is out here. We have a kosher vendor on the street.”
Gyros, falafels, pickles, pulled pork, jerk chicken and lemonade were all available to compliment any bagel for the 20,000 people that were expected to attend the festival during its 14th year Sunday.
“It’s grown year after year, and today’s a really nice day,” said Kesten.
When the festival started, Kesten said Monticello was declared the Bagel Capital of New York State.
“And modern bagel making was started in Sullivan County when the first bagel machine was made here. And that machine is on display at the Sullivan County Museum in nearby Hurleyville,” he said.
Back on Broadway, it wasn’t just bagels. There was a car show, live music and a bouncy house for the kids.
