CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man with an extensive criminal history was taken into custody Thursday after videos circulated online showing him attacking women on the streets of Charlotte, including an assault that police said left one victim with serious injuries.
The suspect, identified as Di-Quan Schafar Hunt, had previously been arrested and released 14 times before his latest encounter with authorities.
Footage obtained and shared by Matt Van Swol showed a Black man approaching and attacking a White woman as she walked along a Charlotte sidewalk. Van Swol said the encounter appeared to occur without provocation and that the man pursued the woman while threatening her life.
“I have obtained footage of a Black male attacking a White woman on the streets of Charlotte NC,” Matt Van Swol said.
“He appears to attack her for no reason while she walks on the sidewalk, he chases her, and says he will kill her,” Matt Van Swol said.
Video of the encounter showed the woman attempting to get away as the man followed her.
A separate recording posted by Van Swol showed another violent encounter involving Hunt. In that second video, Hunt was shown beating a White woman who appeared to be unconscious on the pavement.
The videos drew attention to Hunt before authorities announced that he had been located and taken into custody.
WSOC reported later Thursday that Di-Quan Schafar Hunt had been arrested. Police said the woman injured in the previous Thursday’s attack in Charlotte’s Dilworth area suffered serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
A statement announcing Hunt’s apprehension said:
“CMPD has taken Di-Quan Schafar Hunt, the random Dilworth attack suspect, into custody.
Hunt has an extensive criminal history. Police say the female victim from last Thursday’s attack suffered serious but non life threatening injuries.
He is being evaluated at a medical facility and then will be taken to jail and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. CMPD says the investigation is ongoing”
The custody announcement said Hunt was being evaluated at a medical facility before being transferred to jail.
Authorities said Hunt will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
His arrest also renewed attention on his criminal history. Hunt had been arrested and released 14 times before being taken into custody in connection with the latest investigation, according to information accompanying another post about the case.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the investigation remains ongoing as Hunt moves from medical evaluation into the criminal justice system.
