A group of activists identifying themselves as members of the Democratic Socialists of America or its International Committee have reportedly signed a public declaration pledging to “support” and “defend” the People’s Republic of China and advance understanding of its socialist system.
The declaration was organized by Friends of Socialist China, a London-based organization that lists 952 signatories. Eleven of those signers describe themselves as affiliated with the DSA or the organization’s International Committee, according to a New York Post report.
The Times of London first reported the presence of DSA-affiliated names among the signatories.
Friends of Socialist China says those signing the statement “resolve to support, defend and build understanding of Chinese socialism.” The document presents China as a central force in a broader international movement away from capitalism and toward socialism.
“The global advance to socialism is indispensable if humanity is to survive and to flourish,” the pledge states.
It describes capitalism as “totally incapable of solving the problems of poverty and inequality” and argues that the economic system is “inextricably linked with war, empire, racism, misogyny, alienation, and environmental destruction.”
The declaration also explains why its organizers place particular emphasis on China rather than treating all socialist governments and movements equally.
“Why China?” the pledge asks. “We support all states building or aspiring to socialism, and we favour the highest level of unity and friendship between them. We foreground China in particular because its size and level of development give it an objectively critical role in the global transition to socialism.”
The reported affiliations have attracted additional attention because the DSA has increased its influence in Democratic politics, including through its relationship with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Two social media posts circulated details about the pledge and the DSA-linked signatories after publication of the report.
The available information does not establish that the pledge was adopted or endorsed by the DSA as an organization. The report identifies individual signers who described themselves as DSA members or as affiliated with the group’s International Committee.
No information was provided indicating whether the State Department or another federal agency had opened an inquiry into the declaration or the individuals who signed it.
