TOWN OF THOMPSON – A bald eagle that appeared to be injured and standing in the middle of the westbound lanes of Route 17 in the Town of Thompson was rescued by Sullivan County Sheriff’s personnel after it was spotted Tuesday morning.
The bird was feeding on a deer carcass when it was apparently struck by a passing vehicle and appeared to disoriented and unable to fly.
The bird was corralled into an animal crate and despite Det. Chris Valastro wearing protective gear supplied by Catskill Animal Rescue, he took a talon to his leg requiring medical attention.
The eagle was turned over to a state Department of Environmental Conservation wildlife technician and taken to the Friends of the Feathered and Furry in Hunter where it will be rehabilitated and eventually released back into the wild.
Assisting at the scene were Sheriff’s Sgt. John Pano, Det. Chris Valastro, Joanne Gerow of Catskill Animal Resue, Lt. Cheryl Crumley, Sgt. Samantha Cohn, DEC Wildlife Technician Parick Fitzgerald and Sheriff Mike Schiff.
