Former NIAID director’s diary entries show self-aggrandizement, contradictions, and accusations against political opponents.

Recently released diary entries from Dr. Anthony Fauci, obtained by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), reveal the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director’s belief that attacks against him were part of a right-wing conspiracy to “destroy democracy.”

In an October 3, 2021, entry, Fauci wrote that the nation was “headed to or might already be in a constitutional crisis with the far right clearly indicating that they’re going to try and disrupt elections and essentially destroy the democracy.” He added, “The attacks on me I believe are all a tangential part of that process. I speak of the big lie of which I unfortunately have been drawn into being a target of the far right because I represent something that is antithetical to them, namely, the truth.”

The entries also expose Fauci’s contradictions. While publicly downplaying the severity of COVID-19, he privately acknowledged in his diary that the virus’s fatality rate was “quite lower” than his public statements suggested. Yet, in the same journal, he dismissed the lab-leak theory, writing: “It is stunning how much time is consumed on warding off the egregious lies about the NIAID grant that funded a small project in the Wuhan Institute of Virology. They claim that we created the COVID virus. Among the scientists who fall into this trap are the usual suspects of Richard Ebright and David Relman. However, Jesse Bloom has really surprised me, claiming that a lab leak is highly probable when there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that a lab leak has occurred.”

This claim is undermined by another diary entry where Fauci admitted that most scientists on a January 2020 call “felt that deliberate insertion was possible.”

In an August 2021 entry, Fauci again targeted conservatives, writing that the “conspiracy of the far right and the Trump loyalists continues” against him. He cited a report by House Foreign Affairs Committee Republicans suggesting that the lab leak caused COVID-19 and hinted at NIH’s role in creating the virus. Fauci called this “based on no new information or no new data,” framing it as part of a “Big Lie” narrative.

“First, Trump actually won the election; next, January 6th was a friendly visit to the Capitol book shop; next, Trump was right and China caused the virus; next, Fauci and the NIH helped the Chinese create the virus; next, discredit Fauci and it looks like Trump is telling the truth,” he wrote. “It is plain and simple a concerted effort aimed at getting Trump re-elected and exonerating him from any blame in the complete mess up of his response to COVID-19.”

Fauci’s diary also reveals his role in shaping pandemic policies, including persuading local leaders to shut down schools and businesses, promoting cloth masks despite previously dismissing them as a “paranoid tool” in 2019, and criticizing unvaccinated Americans. These actions occurred as public health officials made false claims about vaccines preventing transmission and infection.

Fauci is scheduled to testify before the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on Wednesday.
