MAHOPAC- Fourth graders in the Mahopac School District traveled back in time when studying Colonial America by bringing 18th century experiences to life.
The nine and ten-year-olds along with their teachers dressed in colonial attire rotated between classrooms and participated in activities designed to showcase what life was like during colonial times. Students sewed patriotic-themed pillows, planted vegetable and flower beds, played traditional colonial children’s games, made animal ink prints, and even dyed their own T-shirts. The interactive stations provided students with a unique opportunity to experience some of the skills and activities that were part of everyday life in early America.
Lakeview Elementary School teacher Danielle Romano described Colonial Day as “one of the highlights of the year for our fourth graders. The students have so much fun participating in the different activities, and it is exciting to watch them make connections between what they learned in the classroom and what life may have been like during colonial times. It truly brings history to life.”
The experience also included a traditional colonial-style meal featuring turkey, corn bread, mashed potatoes and corn provided by the school’s PTO.
